This is a win-win holiday destination for the passionate golfers in the family as well as for those who don’t share the love for the game.

Let’s play golf

On arrival at Selborne Golf Estate, you will be transported back to a time when the world moved a little slower. RnR is the order for the day – and perhaps a game of golf. Set on an eco-state adjacent to Pennington, the golf course is affectionately known as the ‘Augusta’ of South Africa, with its rolling greens and water features. Designed by Denis Barker, the course will challenge both amateurs and professionals alike. Meandering its way through scenic indigenous coastal bush and forest, your only distractions will be, local wildlife sightings and the stunning sea views from 11 of the 18 holes. To overcome the challenges that the course may throw at you, golfing legend, Trevor Wilkes, is on hand for extra lessons to help with your game or swing. Staying at Selborne Golf Estate luxury accommodation means you have daily access to the golf course from your front door. The onsite Pro Shop has all you need, from golf bags, clubs, and balls, to appropriate clothing. All you need to do is wake up and tee off.

Let’s go to the beach

For those in the family not inclined to spend a day on the golf course, you are certainly not forgotten. At Selborne Golf Estate you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to extra activities and amenities. Just 3.5 km down the road is the Blue Flag Pennington Beach, which will keep all members of the family entertained – from sunbathing, swimming, surfing and building sandcastles, to collecting shells. To find out more of what Pennington Beach has to offer, please refer to our previous blog. Furthermore, as a resident at Selborne Golf Estate accommodation, you have access to the private Selborne Beach Club at Pennington Beach – offering you private parking, a swimming pool, braai area, kitchen, changing rooms and restrooms. This is the perfect spot for the entire family to reconnect and catch up on the golfing and beach experiences of the day.

Prince’s Grant Rentals – To Beach or to Golf?

Prince’s Grant Rentals finding the perfect holiday destination for the whole family is never an easy task. Everyone has their own idea and expectations of what would make for an ideal holiday. For golfers, a golf holiday at Prince’s Grant Rentals will always be top of the list – but what about the non-golfers in the family? It is a well-known fact that you cannot please all the people all the time – but at Prince’s Grant Rentals, we believe we can certainly try to please everyone, whether you play golf or not.

For the golfers – Time to tee-off

Since 1994, Prince’s Grant Rentals is proudly home to one of the most highly rated golf courses in South Africa. The impressive partnership between Peter Matkovitch and Dale Hayes – the course architects and designers – has given rise to a Links/Parklands course with impressive fairways coupled with scenic Indian Ocean views. Uniquely designed to present similar challenges to that of a traditional Scottish Links course, Matkovitch’s philosophy was to create a course with the average golfer in mind, rather than the top professional. So no matter your handicap, playing a round at the Prince’s Grant Golf Course needs to be on your bucket list!

Staying in one of Prince’s Grant Luxury Rentals means you have daily access to the golf course from your front door. If you have forgotten a club, lost too many balls, or if a non-experienced member of the family decides to join you, the onsite Pro Shop has all the latest equipment, clothing, tees, brands and golf balls for all ages.

The golf club is situated just north of Durban International Airport and 10 minutes from Ballito. On arrival, you can rent a golf cart and play a quick 9 holes, or practise your swing beforehand. The North Coast KZN climate allows for year-round golfing, with warm winters, sunshine, and clear blue skies. Ranked as one of the top 20 golf courses in SA and boasting formidable fairways, immaculate greens and challenging bunkers, you will want to play this course more than once. That is the added advantage of holidaying at one of Prince’s Grant’s Rentals.

For the non-golfers – Time to relax, swim, play or explore

At Prince’s Grant, we understand that not everyone has a love for the game of golf and we keep to our promise that there is something for everyone. While the golfing members of your family are out and about on the course, savour the 4-5 hours by taking advantage of all the other local activities on offer. If you are sporty, you can choose between tennis and squash, followed by a refreshing dip in the swimming pool. To relax, spend that time by the pool with a good book or head for a spa treatment at one of the local wellness centres. For the nature lovers in the family, grab a pair of binoculars and go bird watching or explore the natural coastal forest for local wildlife. Those who are more adventurous can wander down to the lagoon for some canoeing. By the time the golfers return with their scorecards analyzed, you can all head to the local a la carte restaurant for lunch followed by a siesta. An early dinner, followed by a sunset walk on the beach and family game night will be the perfect end to the day. Everyone is happy.

Selborne Golf Estate – Discover and Appreciate Sharks and Crocs

Your family holiday is scheduled. Tick. Accommodation at Selborne Golf Estate? Booked. All that is left is to plan your to-do list and activity itinerary. A holiday at Selborne is largely about relaxation – be that on the beach or the golf course – but it is also about the added experiences and memories that the KZN south coast has to offer. You don’t want to arrive home with regrets saying, ‘I wish we had done that!’

In our most recent blogs, we outlined day trips to the spectacular beaches around Selborne Golf Estate, and the on-site experiences for golfers and non-golfers. But relaxation is not only measured in suntans and scorecards. Sometimes adventure activities are encouraged, whether you are an adrenaline junkie or not. If you are holidaying at Selborne, we suggest two adventures for families – both involve getting up close and personal with creatures that have traditionally instilled fear in even the most brave-hearted among us.

Shark Cage Diving

If the movie, JAWS, still gives you the “heebie jeebies,” how about confronting your fear of sharks by being pushed out of your comfort zone and into a cage? Recognised by SAMSA (South African Marine Safety Association), we can assure you shark cage diving is completely safe – and ideal for the whole family. You will be relieved to know that the cage is actually a visual and tactile deterrent to the sharks.

Ready to take the plunge? Shark Cage Diving at Park Rynie, a mere 10 minute drive from your Selborne Golf Estate accommodation, is for anyone from the age of 8 upwards. No previous diving experience is needed – just a sense of adventure. The only warning is to keep your fingers and toes inside the cage! You are can expect to see 5-20 sharks per dive, and if, for some reason, there are no shark sightings, you are guaranteed your money back. Your shark diving adventure begins on land with an educational talk about sharks and marine life and climaxes deep in the ocean with a close-up encounter that will surpass any IMAX experience.

Crocworld Conservation Centre

If shark cage diving doesn’t satisfy the thrill seeker in you and you would rather find more adventure on land, then head to Crocworld Conservation Centre, just 16km from Selborne Golf estate. It makes for an ideal family day out, whether crocodiles lazing in the sun are your cup of tea or not. Here you will be treated to a complete wildlife experience. Aside from feeding the crocodiles, depending on the season, you may be lucky enough to encounter some hatchlings, giving younger visitors a unique opportunity to hold a baby croc. Make sure you get a photo opportunity with Henry – the 100-year-old Nile crocodile with his harem of 7 wives who produce 300 babies a year!

The adventure doesn’t end there. Crocworld is host to 11 of the 12 dozen deadly venomous snakes in South Africa and there are daily snake handling demonstrations. After lunching at the Le Rendez-Voux Restaurant, you can either wander through the aviary, home to 99 species of birds, or you can go horse riding. Be sure not to miss the Harris the Hawk demonstration, scheduled twice daily. Your entire family will come away from Crocworld with fond memories and a renewed awareness of conserving our wildlife and environment.

When you get back to your Selborne Golf Estate rental property, you can spend the evening going through the photos and voting on the most exciting activity. If you have not yet booked your accommodation at Selborne Golf Estate, please visit us online to view all available properties and request a quote.

Prince’s Grant Rentals – Where Adventure Calls

There is a dictum that says, ‘If you are ever in a situation where your life flashes before you – make sure you have something to watch.’ This calls to the hidden adventurer in all of us, motivating us to grab opportunities and embrace experiences.

From Land to Sea to Sky
If you have booked a holiday at one of Prince’s Grant rentals on the KZN north coast, all kinds of adventure await – from hiking and cycling on land, snorkeling and surfing in the ocean, to floating in the skies with micro-lighting.

Land adventures
For those who get seasick or are afraid of heights, there are plenty of land adventure activities to enjoy. For an ideal family day out, grab your camera and hiking shoes and head to Ballito, just half an hour away from your luxury Prince’s Grant rental. This is the starting point of the Ballito North to Salt Rock Trail – a comfortable 5km hiking trail which traverses the spectacularly scenic and rugged coastline. Look out for unique rock formations and marine life, while stretches of white sand and irresistible tidal pools provide a welcome distraction along the way.

When the tide comes in, there are optional cliff paths to help you navigate your way around. During the summer season, you will have the rare opportunity of watching local sand artists at work creating their masterpieces. Tidal Tao offers a unique and educational rocky shore night walk, where you will get a completely different view of the coastline while spotting night critters and marine life that will delight all. Numbers are limited to 15, so booking is essential.

For the cyclists and mountain bikers, adventure is right up your alley at Sugar Rush Park, a charming farm setting filled with outdoor adventure activities for the entire family. The mountain biking track is a 1km network of trails that wind their way through the scenic, onsite gum tree forest. Sugar Rush Park is also host to one of South Africa’s popular weekly 5km Park Runs.

Take to the Sea with adventures near Prince’s Grant Rentals
Snorkeling ranks as one of the most popular and safest ocean activities. Down the road from Prince’s Grant Rentals, the 2-hour “Discover Snorkelling Safari” at Tidal Tao is perfect for first-timers to get a glimpse of the wonders of the ocean. Small groups and qualified guides offer you an unforgettable experience. You will definitely be back for more! In fact, you can return at night for a different kind of adrenaline rush with Tidal Tao’s “Night Snorkelling Safari.” This may not be for the faint-hearted, but you will witness a magical and colourful world of underwater marine life you would never see during the day. The highlight is viewing the corals with UV light.

If watching surfers catching barrels and riding waves gives you a thrill, then thanks to Ballito Surf School you no longer need to be a ‘hodad’ (a wannabe surfer who spends time at the beach but never surfs). Pick up a board, sign up for a few lessons to learn the ropes and the basics, and soon you will be out there duck diving and making the drop. ‘Surf’s up’ will become one of your favourite phrases.

Sky adventures
For a birds-eye view of the KZN Dolphin coastline, ComeFly is just the place to give you wings and help you soar – offering you microlight trips just a couple of kilometers from the coast. Accomplished and experienced instructors guarantee your safety while you enjoy the thrill of flying. Starting from Tinley Manor with the option of either venturing north up to the Tugela River Mouth, or cruising south, past Salt Rock and Ballito to Zimbali, you will fly over unspoiled beaches, sugar cane fields and rolling hills. Anyone from the age of 9 upwards can fly. There is, however, a weight restriction of 120kg. As micro lighting is dependent on the prevailing wind conditions, it is advisable to confirm bookings the day before.

Within easy access of Prince’s Grant rentals, your adventure awaits. Be it land, sea, sky, or all three, you are definitely in for a treat of note. For further travel tips and ideas, be those beach activities or golf activities, catch up on all our previous blogs. Mjejane Accommodation – Tips you should know before going on a Game Safari

Mjejane Accommodation, Once you’ve taken the detour around Nelspruit, you’ve reached the final stretch of the trip to your luxurious Mjejane accommodation. The meandering Crocodile river peers just beyond the horizon and you can almost hear a bull elephant roar in the near distance. When traveling to Mjejane reserve, the thought of a safari experience will consume you with excitement. Sometimes it’s easy to forget you’re entering the wild, which comes with various risks.

For your safety and the promotion of conservation, we’ve compiled this short summary of tips for being a responsible safari visitor at your Mjejane accommodation. Read below and prepare properly for an unforgettable safari getaway.

Always bring plenty of drinking water with you on Safari

This tip shouldn’t even need to be mentioned. Yet, in the excitement to make the early morning call for a game drive, many guests have forgotten to bring the most basic essentials. The area around Mjejane accommodation is hot and dry almost all year round. Once you leave the comfort of your accommodation, there is limited access to water.

Carry a bottle of water with you at all times on safari to avoid possible dehydration in the hot midday sun around Mjejane accommodation. In addition, remember to bring sun cream, a hat, some snacks for energy and an awesome camera.

Never leave your vehicle while driving through an open safari reserve.

It’s one of those signs you cannot miss – “REMAIN IN YOUR VEHICLE AT ALL TIMES”. However, every now and then, a YouTube video emerges of humans tempting fate by making incredibly reckless excursions close to wild African animals. Not only are Africa’s wild cats carnivorous, but many animals you will encounter at Mjejane accommodation are incredibly territorial and will react if they feel threatened. Exercise caution and remain in the comfort and security of your vehicle.

Respect the environment by keeping the Kruger Park spotless.

Ever heard the term “Take only photographs and leave only footprints”? While the previous tip asserts that you shouldn’t get too comfortable outside while on safari, it serves to reinforce our commitment to respecting and preserving nature while reducing any human impact on the beautiful surroundings of Mjejane accommodation. Don’t leave anything behind that doesn’t belong in the bush – Make sure you take all waste back to your lodge while disposing of any trash in a responsible manner.

Respect an Animal’s instinct at a Game sighting.

Having driven around fruitlessly for some time, it’s easy to get carried away with excitement when getting a glimpse of an amazing animal sighting. For the animal in question, the senses are often reversed. If a wild animal feels threatened or cornered, it is likely to react in a fight or flight manner – neither of which are pleasant! Respect the space of a herd or pack. Give them ample room to pass by vehicles and move along in a manner courteous to both the animal and your fellow safari guests.

Contribute to the Area by buying local handmade gifts and produce

While staying at your Mjejane accommodation and venturing to and from the Kruger Park, it’s not just animal sightings that capture your smile and tug at your heart. The area is equally revered for its fruit and nut plantations, often sold ‘fresh off the tree’ at a roadside padstal. Local artists also produce gifts and artwork inspired by the Kruger National Park. If you’re looking to take home some gifts for friends and family, endeavor to buy direct while avoiding excessive haggling. Small acts of kindness can combine to uplift the communities around Mjejane game reserve and create a sustainable and responsible sector for future generations to enjoy.

Eco Explore Africa

If you are passionate about eco-travel, responsible tourism, and African safari experiences, we highly recommend that you take a further look at Eco Explore Africa as a comprehensive eco travel platform. In anticipation of your upcoming trip to Mjejane accommodation, you can discover how to make the most from your safari experience through the experiences of seasoned conservationists.
